San Pedro Bay Ports Keep Cargo Volumes Near Record Levels

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach continued to handle historically strong cargo volumes in July, reinforcing signs of an extended peak shipping season despite ongoing trade uncertainty.

The Port of Los Angeles moved 960,464 TEUs in July, its second-highest July total on record and 7.5% above its five-year July average. The Port of Long Beach handled 928,508 TEUs, its second-busiest July ever and fourth-strongest month in its 115-year history.

Combined, the two San Pedro Bay ports moved nearly 1.9 million TEUs in July, underscoring the continued strength of the nation's largest import gateway.

The strong volumes come despite softer year-over-year comparisons, which reflect unusually heavy frontloading last summer ahead of anticipated trade policy changes. Analysts point to resilient consumer demand as a key driver, with the peak season now expected to remain elevated into September.

Through July, Los Angeles has handled 6.08 million TEUs, up 1.8% year over year, while Long Beach has processed 5.76 million TEUs, up 1.2%. Together, the ports have moved nearly 11.84 million TEUs so far in 2026, keeping the Southern California gateway on pace for another exceptionally strong year.
